Member Frequently Asked Questions

What types of programs are listed on the Register?

There are two categories of CPD listed on the register:

  • Nationally accredited vocational education, higher education courses and NIBA quality assessed programs; and
  • Professional participation activities - programs that include industry seminars and workshops, business expos, industry discussion groups and forums, business luncheons/breakfasts, conferences and conventions and in-house and cluster training.

Progams are listed in two ways on the register

  • NIBA Quality Assessed listing
  • Standard Listing

Standard Listing

NIBA will list programs on the register that they believe are programs of benefit for the Insurance and Risk sector. Any program that adds to the constructive development of their membership will be considered for listing and promotion, not limited to just product and process programs.

Programs accredited by NIBA College for the CPD Register must meet the training criteria outlined below. Most programs will be awarded the one point per contact hour with a maximum of 10 points per session and 12 points per convention or conference. Some activities may receive fewer points if the program does not fully meet all the criteria. For example, industry lunches with a key note speaker receive a standard 30 minute rating.

Courses must meet the following criteria whether the program is a public or in-house event:

  • Cover a topic which is relevant to the participants' job role;
  • Impart information over and above the basic day-to-day processes and knowledge required for the participant to perform their job role;
  • Have a clear set of learning objectives;
  • Be of sufficient length to ensure that the learning objectives can be achieved;
  • Be designed and presented by appropriately qualified and/or experienced personnel;
  • Cover material at an appropriate level for the participants;
  • Have an organised orderly framework;
  • Utilise suitable training methods; and
  • Impart knowledge of an educational or technical nature.

NIBA Quality Endorsement Assessed listing

NIBA has developed its own quality education criteria against which programs can be assessed. The criteria covers all aspects of the education program;

  • Content
  • Outcome
  • Learning experience
  • Assessment; and
  • the providers industry support and knowledge.

We believe the assessment provides potential participants with some assurance of the quality and educational experience the programs provide, in addition, as a result of the NIBA assessment, these programs attract significantly higher CPD points then the Standard listing – good for time poor participants seeking to meet their annual CPD point requirement.

What is CPD?

CPD activities are those that increase your ability to perform your professional obligations. In the broadest sense this means the management of your clients, staff, the business and your own conduct. The choice of program is left to your own discretion, but it must be relevant to your business or job role.

CPD activities approved by NIBA College are either structured or unstructured learning situations. Structured CPD activities have the following key characteristics:

  • Organised with a clear set of learning objectives;
  • Employ formal instructional methods for imparting the information or skills e.g. lectures, workshops and group discussions;
  • Designed to encourage the active involvement of participants whether you simply attend a lecture or complete case studies or pre-work; and
  • Participation by the broker is capable of verification e.g. brokers receive an attendance certificate or a formal assessment.

Unstructured CPD activities are those that are not formally organised activities but still provide brokers with an opportunity for learning. These include private or industry research work and informal learning events such as professional reading.

How many CPD Points do I need?

The amount of Professional Development to be undertaken is to be decided by the Licensee. ASIC PS146 recommends that Licensees follow the guidelines developed by the appropriate industry trade association. That means Insurance Brokers are recommended to follow NIBA guidelines. All NIBA members are currently required to undertake 24 hours of appropriate Continuing Professional Development per year. Other employees are bound by ASIC’s requirements as laid out above.

NIBA members can earn points by doing activities in two or more of the following categories The percentage of CPD points that can be claimed from any one category is as follows:

CPD Category % CPD points claimable Minimum points claimable in one year
1. Vocational, higher education course or NIBA quality accredited program
2. Professional participation activities
3. Industry leadership activities
66% 16
4. Self development activities 33% 8

The NIBA College CPD Register publishes programs in category 1 and 2. Programs in Category 3 and 4 are accredited individually on a case by case basis by NIBA College and are not listed on the register.

Will programs not listed on the CPD register still count towards my CPD?

Organisations providing broker training must obtain a CPD Register listing for their programs. Without this accreditation, members are not able to claim time at the program towards their annual CPD requirements. In general, product launches and events that are mainly for the promotion of a particular product or company would not fit meet the listing criteria.

However, not all eligible CPD categories are is listed on the NIBA College register.

Their importance is still recognised and they will therefore count towards unstructured training hours. Unstructured programs are accredited individually by NIBA College on a case by case basis and are categorised as:

  • Industry leadership activities cover article writing, industry presentations, teaching activities, structured mentoring programs and technical committee work; and
  • Self development activities cover a range of individual research activities as well as professional reading.

How does NIBA know if I have met my CPD requirements?

NIBA principal members must sign and submit a CPD undertaking each year to the NIBA Membership Coordinator/Registrar. The CPD undertaking lists all QPIBs and asks the principal to verify that these individuals have accumulated the minimum CPD points for the year from the allowable training categories. The undertaking covers CPD completed in a 12 month period ending on 30th June. NIBA conducts audits of CPD activities on a company basis each December. Audited members must furnish documentary proof of CPD participation. For information on completing your CPD undertaking, or if you believe you have extenuating circumstances which would exempt you from your CPD requirements, please email the registrar at niba@niba.com.
